The Requirements for Naturalization and Citizenship in the United States

Two women talking about bona fide determination

Naturalization is a legal process that grants immigrants permanent resident status while giving them the time they need to pursue full citizenship after satisfying the requirements set forth by the government. These are some of the requirements you’ll need to meet:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You can’t already be a U.S. citizen.
  • You must currently be a permanent resident of the U.S.
  • You must be a permanent resident for at least five years.

Not sure if you’re eligible for naturalization? Don’t try to navigate the process on your own. If you do, you may end up having to wait longer than you deserve. Instead, speak with an experienced naturalization lawyer. We’ll be able to review your situation and your immigration status to help you determine if you’re ready to apply for naturalization and citizenship.

Why Should You Pursue Citizenship?

As a United States permanent resident, you can work and live in the U.S. as long as you have the necessary documentation on hand. However, that’s where the benefits of permanent residency end. You won’t have the right to vote, receive federal benefits, or the ability to petition the government to allow your family to join them in the United States. However, once you achieve citizenship, you’ll have the same rights given to any citizen of the United States, regardless of where you were born or how you entered the country.

you are not alone
